Royal Mile Apartment

227 Royal Mile Apartments Edinburgh (sleeps 4 +2 )

A fist floor luxury apartment in Edinburgh, set in the centre of old Edinburgh where people have lived since ancient Celtic times. Though the façade was built in 1795 the core of the building dates from the 1500's.

At the front there are three windows with bench seats from which you can enjoy the life of the Royal Mile. All around there are cafés, pubs and restaurants, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Office is right across the street. and during the Festival this part of the street is closed to traffic; pipers play, jugglers and fire eaters dance, musicians and street actors draw crowds of adults and children.

Just a 5 minute stroll up the Royal Mile takes you to Edinburgh Castle, once you are inside the Castle grounds there is so much to see, it really is a village of different buildings arranged around the main battlements. It's good to watch the 1 o'clock gun fire over the the city. You can wander round the Castle and grounds, but the main event of the year is the Edinburgh Tattoo, which happens throughout the Festival period and the best time to go is at the weekend as there are fireworks as well. My advice is to take a cushion as the seats are quite hard and the whole Tattoo is quite long, fantastic, but long. The location of 227 on the Royal Mile lets you see over the street as every evening the throngs of people ambling up the cobbled street to the castle is sight to see.

Edinburgh is wonderful at the Festival, but all year it shows a heady variety of Theatre, Art and Music. I particularly enjoy the Gallery of Modern Art and the Portrait gallery. But this could also be called the City of Music, as music is always close by, from the many gigs in pubs, clubs and underground caverns to the higher art of the Festival and Kings Theatres.

On my last visit I went to Mary Kings Close, which is just a few yards from this Royal Mile apartment. I have been meaning to visit this underground labyrinth for a long time and was astonished by its revalation of a bygone Edinburgh, a victorian Edinburgh of squalour and deprivation. It is a subterranean exposition of a life I am pleased to be far from. Very interesting and a must see attraction. Such a contrast to see this and then come home to the Royal Mile apartment with its obvious light and space and comfort.

The last thing I would like to mention about 227 is its perfect orientation, the livng and dining area overlooks the the Royal Mile with its lively activity, but the bedrooms are at the back end of the house, far away from the noise of the street. You are assured of a great holiday if you choose to stay here.
