Vernon's personal review of the accommodation, location and items of interest

Locherlour Mill - Luxury Self Catering Scotland sleeps 18 to 20 people. (or 12 without the annex)

This is the perfect example of the raison d'etre for this guide. Truly the best self catering that Scotland can offer.

I first came to Crieff for a holiday many years ago to the world famous Crieff Hydro (as many thousands of people have done) and fell in love with the area. Its one of those rare places that just seems to be the heart of everything. Situated close to many of Scotland's most famous places like Gleneagles, the Trossachs national park, Callander and Huntley, the wonderful Loch Tay, the ancient Highland capital of Perth, and yet you can still have day trips to Edinburgh, Stirling, Falkirk and Glasgow through some of the best scenery Scotland can offer.

I recently went for a really enjoyable break with some good friends, we hired a whole collection of classic cars from a wonderful company called Motorparty -classic car hire Scotland- and one of the best things was an amazing walk from Crieff to Mutehill finishing at the Barley Bree Restaurant where we enjoyed a superb meal. Where better to retire for the day than one of Scotland's best self catering properties; Locherlour Mill offering luxury self catering Scotland sleeps 20.

It has been described as Scotland's best self catering accommodation and I wouldn't like to disagree, it is truely remarkable. The entrance opens up to a stunning banqueting room with a table that sits up to 20 which is adjacent to the highly stylish kitchen with the longest Island, a kitchen that has every conceivable luxury. To cook here is a pleasure for the true gastronome,

I love the interior decoration, the final step on a major complete renovation undertaken between 2008 and 2009 everything is fresh, beautiful and so exquisitely designed that it is a pleasure discovering the house. The bedroom hunt at the beginning of a stay here is great fun, every time you discover a new bedroom you want it to be yours for the holiday. Whichever you choose you will have the most comfortable sleep as no expense has been spared in fitting the finest cotton, feather down duvets & pocket mattresses

As you have probably realised by looking at the properties in this guide, I love contemporary conversions of historic buildings, the juxtaposition of smart new materials next to rustic stonework is so nice to see and experience. The use of glass balustrading at the central staircase with the stone backdrop epitomises a keen pallet

garmoran Square

As Locherlour Mill is a grade-B listed building, it had to be renovated to the strict standards of Historic Scotland, and use traditional materials wherever possible. For example, the entire roof of the Mill was replaced and all the old existing slates were re-used, all 4569 of them! Each slate was carefully removed, cleaned, set aside, and then replaced back on the new roof. Several areas of the original lime mortar had to be re-pointed. The old lime mortar at the Mill scientifically analysed to identify the correct composition. A quarry in Callendar (20 miles away) was identified with the same gravel composition, and we believe that this was the quarry used when the Mill was first built in 1832.
