Kylesmorar - Knoydart Accommodation - 3 cottages each sleep up to 4 total 12

For those who simply long to escape from the hustle and bustle of 21st century life these cottages will be the perfect destination. Accessible only by water from the town of Mallaig, the cottages nestle beneath the mountains of North Morar to the south and on the shore of Loch Nevis, the 'Loch of Heaven' on Scotland's glorious west coast.

The Wee House sleeps 4, the Old Post Office also sleeps 4, and it is the Old Schoolhouse which can be let with an additional Bothy together offering accommodation sleeping 4.

The cottages have been completely renovated in a creative and interesting way.

The Wee House provides superb knoydart accommodation for up to four guests.  The upstairs double bedroom has a bathroom across the landing, while the twin bedroom downstairs has an adjoining shower room.  The two excellent reception rooms have original features such as exposed stone walls, and have views over the bay. An oil stove in the living room keeps the whole house cosy while the kitchen has all you need for a comfortable stay.

The Old Post Office was once the hub of village life in Kylesmorar.  Whitewashed in the traditional style, it has now been completely renovated and refurbished and, just a few yards from the water's edge, has uninterrupted views over Loch Nevis to Skye's Cuillin Mountains.  Inside, the spacious sitting room has exposed beams, stone walls and a cosy log-burning stove.  This room opens on to a farmhouse-style dining kitchen with a large pine table and oil-fired stove, while upstairs there are double and twin bedrooms, both of which look over the Loch.  A shower room with power shower completes the accommodation.

The Bothy has a remarkable open plan living area, with stone floor, exposed wood beams and an oil-fired stove, which opens out into the garden area.  The spacious bedroom has twin beds (which can be pushed together) and a modern bathroom with bath and separate shower. The Bothy can be rented alone or in conjunction with the Old Schoolhouse to provide an extra bedroom, (situated about 40ft from the Bothy) This additional double bedroom has timber lined walls, a real log fire at the end of the bed and has been beautifully furnished, - An idyllic spot to lie and watch the sun set over the Cuillins of Skye or the dawn break over the Loch.

Whether you intend to curl up in front of a roaring log fire, take leisurely strolls along the beach, perhaps picking up a few mussels for lunch as you go, or be more active and tackle some of the Munros in the area, there is plenty to keep you occupied. Weather permitting, the Estate boat can take you across to Inverie on the Knoydart peninsula for an exhilarating walk and/or lunch at Britain's most remote pub, before getting the afternoon ferry back to Kylesmorar.  In peak season, the ferry calls in to Kylesmorar once a day from Mallaig (Monday-Friday) and the fare at the beginning and end of your stay is included in the rental.

Points of interest

garmoran Square

  • Accessible only by boat, Kylesmorar  lies east of Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland, on the shores of  lonely Loch Nevis, the 'Loch of Heaven', round which no roads run. Once a thriving crofting community, its original inhabitants are long gone and it is now home only to a small  community of estate workers.   The Wee House, the Bothy/Schoolhouse and the Old Post Office have been spectacularly converted into holiday homes using local craftsmen and materials.  They now offer most comfortable and beautifully appointed accommodation in Knoydart furnished with great style and originality.    Each stands just a few yards from the water's edge, nestling right at the foot of some on Scotland's most majestic mountains.
