Plockton Self Catering Studio - (sleeps 4)

There are a few places that I have been to that truly stand out in my mind. The first time I went to Paris, walking through the Latin Quarter to Notre Dame the heat and the smell of the flower market. I remember a remarkable and at times precipitous donkey ride across the valley of the Kings from Luxor in Egypt, and a walk when I was just 17 up a valley in the early morning mist at Leeds Castle. I suppose we all have these striking profound memories that influence our lives. One such memory for me is a motorcycle ride from Colbost on Skye (see no.10 in this guide) to Plockton. I took my helmet off at Balmacara, and rode through the hills with the wind in my hair, I think it was the realisation of my ancestry, my ancient belonging to this most enrapturing landscape that made my heart beat, and my soul sing, and I whooped, I whooped and yahooed and I shouted to the hills that I was alive, that I was vital.

Recently my son went to see Plockton School, he is a keen fiddler and the school is renowned for its dedication and development of Scotland’s young musical talent. I was keen to see if my memory of this landscape was just that, a memory or if it was real. It is real, it is as real today as it has always been, this is Scotland, and this remarkable landscape should be visited by everyone at some point in their lives. After visiting the school we walked from Plockton through Duirinish to Port-an-eorna and returned alongside the railway line. The school was excellent, but my son felt it was just too far away from us and I had to agree, but I think he will always remember that walk and the countryside and when he plays his fiddle the image of Duirinish and Plockton will reveal itself in his music.

So what do you want from an accommodation in this special region of Scotland? space? light? comfort? of course but most importantly large windows to soak it all in. All of these are to be had in this small studio, it is homely, furnished with contemporary flair and as you sit at the warm log fire at the end of each day exploring this fascinating area you are still at one with the landscape.

Plockton Studio is an annex of Parth Galen Holiday House, which sleeps from 2-8 and offers comfortable accommodation.

Set in Achnandarach, in Plockton, on the beautiful west coast of Scotland. The large 0.75 acre enclosed garden is a perfect adventure area for the kids, and there are many woodland walks waiting to be explored, all on your doorstep. The loch is only 2 minutes from the house, and the charming village of Plockton is only minutes away, waiting to be explored.

Plockton

  • Achnandarach is a small hamlet just outside Plockton. Plockton is a National Trust conservation village,with a picturesque harbour, many small shops, galleries, and plenty of fabulous places to eat. This picturesque settlement on the shores of Loch Carron faces the East. It is away from the prevailing winds which together with the North Atlantic drift gives it a mild climate allowing palm trees and cabbage plants native to New Zealand to grow! Artists and photographers are drawn to the area from all over the world. Kyle of Lochalsh is a 10 minute drive and has many fine restaurants, hotels, sea trips, shops, banks and tourist information centre.

Seaprobe Atlantis glass bottom boat trips all include a visit to the ever-present seal colony at Seal Island. Come in early summer and see the newborn pups, as well as all the young fledgeling sea-birds at the protected bird colonies we visit.

Lochcarron Golf Club is a small club situated in one of the most beautiful spots in the Highlands. The golf course is a short but demanding one which is suited for beginners but will test any level of golfer. The course is open throughout the year with catering available at our clubhouse.

There are unlimited walking opportunities within a 30 minute drive from Plockton, but there are also good walks to be made from the village itself, including the (essential) brae walk, the lochside walk to Duncraig Castle, and the hike up to the television mast. There are also organised group walks available, in and out of the village.

Plockton is an old fishing village, fresh fish comes in daily which ensures good local cuisine.Coastal fishing is good and small charters can be made for loch fishing.
